While some people are getting all excited about the Google Android-based phones, I’m going to opt for something way cooler:
The Free Software Foundation (NASDAQ: RMS) has announced the Free Software alternative to the evil, DRM-infested, locked-down, defective-by-design iPhone: the GNUPhone.
The key technical innovation of the GNUPhone is that it is completely operated from the command line. “What could be more intuitive than a bash prompt?” said seventeen-year-old Debian developer Hiram Nerdboy. “The ultimate one-dimensional desktop! Just type dial voice +1-555-1212 –ntwk verizon –prot cdma2000 –ssh-version 2 -a -l -q -9 -b -k -K 14 -x and away you go! Simple and obvious!”
Aaron Seigo has announced that a A KDE 4 port is also in the works, and that the Novell corporation has already started spreading FUD about it.
The phone should be able to make actual phone calls by 2011 to 2012.

(I write about all sorts of news stories … I write cutting satires of supposedly mainstream UK politics and no-one reads it; I write complicated geek jokes and they get hits galore. Go figure. At least I’m one of the top hits on “danielle lloyd sex tape” o_0 )

Please understand that the 2011 to 2012 dates have to be considered with some flexibility. This is not the first version that has been being put together. The first version was all set to roll out in March of this year, but suffered a major setback that required a complete ground up redesign as the FCC required all cell phone providers to dismantle their 800 mhz analog service.
Considering their first concept was to attempt to deploy a VoIP type solution using the Ricochet network, this looks to be a significant step forward, and I look forward to purchasing the tractor trailer necessary to carry all the support equipment I will need to place phone calls.

Just make this bash script:
#!/bin/bash
# dial.sh
/usr/bin/dial voice +1-$1 –ntwk verizon –prot cdma2000 –ssh-version 2 -a -l -q -9 -b -k -K 14 -x
#end
Then add this to your .bashrc :
alias call=’/bin/bash /usr/local/bin/dial.sh’
Then you just need to type:
call 555-1212
So simple!

Why not just do an:
alias call=`/usr/bin/dial voice +1-$1 –ntwk verizon –prot cdma2000 –ssh-version 2 -a -l -q -9 -b -k -K 14 -x` and put it into your .bashrc file?
